D.C. Everest Mock Trial Team Ties Participate in State Competition

The D.C. Everest (DCE) Mock Trial Team competed in the 34th Annual Wisconsin High School Mock Trial tournament March 11 – 12 in Madison, Wisconsin. The team competed against 24 other Regional Champions and second-place finishers from across the state. The tournament consisted of four rounds of semi-final competition on Saturday at the Dane County Courthouse, followed by a Mock Trial Banquet. On Sunday, finalists competed for the state title in the Supreme Court Hearing Room. The DCE team finished with a 3-1 record and in the process defeated the team who was the runner up in the 2016 competition.

Members of the DCE Mock Trial team are: Samantha Baltzell, Brooklyn Ferge, Allison Heckert, Horeb Mahmood, Emma Myers, Braylin Penrod, Adam Peterson, Jack Povilaitis, Libby Radies and Jordan Sazama, The head coach is Travis Greil, DCE Senior High social studies teacher, and the attorney advisors are Rick Cveykus, Vicki Karcher, Kyle Mayo and Elizabeth Reeths.

As part of the Mock Trial team, students learn how to analyze and prepare a case using facts and case materials developed by Wisconsin attorneys. They also learn how to present as a witness and argue their assigned role. The team provides students with a unique opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the court system while receiving feedback from attorneys and judges.
